Mobile money for rent: how to keep a clean record
Paying by MTN MoMo or Orange Money creates a record that protects you. How to use it well.
Paying by MTN MoMo or Orange Money creates a record that protects you. How to use it well.
Paying rent by mobile money is not just convenient. It creates a dated, traceable record of every payment, which is the single best protection a tenant has in a dispute.
How to do it properly
- Always send to the same number, and confirm it in writing with the landlord first
- Put the month in the reference where the service allows it
- Screenshot every confirmation and keep them in one folder
- Still ask for a written receipt — the two together are unarguable
- Never send to a number that changes month to month without explanation
On PINs
Nobody legitimate ever needs your mobile money PIN. Not the landlord, not an agent, not a platform, not the operator's own staff. Anyone asking for it is attempting to rob you, without exception.
If a payment goes to the wrong number
Contact the operator immediately. There is a narrow window in which some transactions can be traced or held. Speed matters more than anything else.
Nkwata never handles rent, deposits or PINs. Payments to us are only for unlocking a listing or for a landlord's listing fee.
