Renting when you are new to Bamenda

You do not know the quarters yet. Here is how to avoid the expensive mistakes.

The short answer

You do not know the quarters yet. Here is how to avoid the expensive mistakes.

Arriving in a city you do not know puts you at a disadvantage that people will notice. These steps close most of the gap.

Rent short before you rent long

If you possibly can, take somewhere for a month or two first. Every serious mistake we hear about comes from someone committing a twelve-month advance in a quarter they had visited once.

Learn the quarters before you choose

Spend an afternoon in each of the two or three you are considering. Go at the hour you would come home, not at midday.

Ask the same three questions everywhere

  • Where does the water come from here?
  • How is the road when it rains?
  • What time does the last car run?

Do not rely on one person

A single helpful contact will steer you towards what they know, which is not necessarily what suits you. Ask several people, including people who have no interest in where you live.

Be careful about being visibly new

Prices adjust for people who do not know the market. Learn the bands before you start negotiating, and never announce that you have just arrived.

We inspect and verify houses across Bamenda — Nkwen, Up Station, Mankon, Old Town, Ntarikon, Mile 2, Below Foncha and Bambili. Everything here comes from properties we have stood inside and landlords we have dealt with, not from research at a desk.
